Aquarius Park Brahmans

Polled Grey Brahmans

Breeding Objectives

The breeding objectives of Aquarius Park Brahman Stud are:

¨ Fertility characteristics - an expectation is placed on the cows to be consistent breeders, as well as exhibiting femineity, longevity and good udder conformation and positive milk figures which are reflected in their offspring; Bull selection includes milk figures.

¨ Impeccable temperament - if they don’t breed quiet they are shipped to colder climates without the opportunity to feed quiet;

¨ Type and fleshing - only animals of good type and conformation and demonstrating good fleshing are retained as breeders and for future bull sales;

¨ Polling -  a combination of issues such as meat quality, docile temperament and animal welfare issues influenced the decision to focus on breeding grey polled cattle. This decision has led to the introduction of grey polled or scurred bulls from the middle 1990’s.

¨ Performance - The stud has been on Breedplan for many years. Performance is important but high performance animals are not kept unless they meet other criteria, particularly temperament, fertility and type. The aim is to breed a herd that has good above average performance but not in the top percentiles, so as to avoid late maturing cattle.

¨ Pigment - is seen as important to avoid the development of problems experienced by other breeds like eye cancers. This is seen as particularly important in a climate getting hotter, with more UV radiation.
